Germany Claims England’s Top Spot

According to recently released data, collected by Chart Track GfK International, Germany has overtaken England as the biggest European video game market, on a country-by-country basis. This is quite significant, as England has proven to be the biggest European gaming market for quite some time now.

Videogame sales in England dropped nearly 20% in year-over-year software sales for the first half of 2009. Portugal saw a 16% increase in YoY software sales, while Sweden notched a 4% gain.

A representative of GfK Media Control claims that the lack of blockbuster games has contributed to the ousting of England for the top spot.

“The decline [is] mostly due to a lack of new-released blockbuster games in the UK in 2009”
