Headshots & Friendly Fire: Round 2

Boom!!  Headshot!

  • Cooperative Play – the “go alone and shoot everything that moves” style of multiplayer has gotten a little stale. It is still a rewarding experience to teabag noobs in Killzone 2, but I find co-op multiplayer to be a far better experience. The new resistance 2 co-op had you team up with 7 buddies to complete various tasks. Uncharted 2 has a very similar co-op campaign, except they add cooperative platforming as well. In both games, enemies attack you from all sides, something you can’t do in single player, because it requires the team to communicate with you and tell you when you need to move your ass. This kind of difficulty that is impossible when you are alone, but can be very easy when in a group is very fun, and I made more friends during the Beta of the Uncharted 2 co-op play, than I did in 4 months of playing Killzone 2.
  • Game/Headset Bundles – You have to love these bundles as they just present such a huge value for gamers, even if the game is trash.. Yes I am looking at you Socom Confrontation.  Usually a headset by itself will run you 50 bucks new, with the game at its usual 60 bucks.   Seperate you are looking at dropping $110 bones but together in a bundle, well that gets you the game for 10 bucks.  If you were lucky enough to purchase the Socom bundle, and I feel horrible saying that, you got the official Sony headset which is in my opinion one of the best accessories that Sony has put out in a while.  If you don’t have one, you really need to purchase it.  These bundles are also a great way to get more headsets into the hands of gamers who might otherwise never purchase one because we all know that online is better with headsets.. and a mute button.  So listen up Sony, bundle an Official headset with Uncharted 2, the game is going to sell like crazy and would get more PS3 owners mic’d up, which is an ongoing issue on the PSN.
  • Progress in Singleplayer Gets You Rewards in Multiplayer, and vice-versa – Almost all the games released so far have had the singleplayer and multiplayer experience be completely separate from each other. It’s almost as if they were completely different games on the same disc. Having an incentive to play both singleplayer and multiplayer would make games more complete. For example, some multiplayer weapons or power-ups should be unlocked by making progress in single player, and some single player power-ups should be unlocked by making progress in multiplayer. I’m not saying that every game needs both singleplayer and multiplayer, but games that do decide to have both should find someway to connect the player to both experiences. When Playing Red Faction: Guerrilla, I never once entered multiplayer because there was so much to do in single player. Now if I got notices saying I unlocked a special weapon in multiplayer, I might be more inclined to go check it out. After all, if you can’t get people to play one aspect of your game, then it’s just wasted resources that could have gone to something else.
  • Batman: Arkham Asylum Rescues our Youth –  Spiderman, Iron-Man, The Hulk, The Fantastic Four, Wolverine and so on.  All of these have two things in common.  First they are all someone I grew up reading, watching and playing.  Secondly, none of them have had a game of recent memory to really portray that character the way it should be.  None of them have had a game in recent memory that was actually awesome, that made you feel like you were when you were a kid.  That was until Batman: Arkham Asylum released.  This game made you feel more like a Super Hero than any game of recent memory, even more than InFamous which I still enjoy playing.  Not only did Batman feel like a badass, but every nemesis of his was portrayed perfectly.  The Joker was dead on with Mark Hammil, Poison Ivy was her usual seductive self, Harley Quinn was flat crazy, Killer Croc, Scarecrow, The Riddler and so on.  The attention to detail in this game was amazing, from the way Batman pounded enemies to the way he glided over the Asylum.  All the gadgets were there and they felt great.  This is how I have always pictured playing as Batman would be, its how I always imagined fighting against the Joker would be.  Please take notice Spiderman, pay attention Hulk, this is how a super hero game is made.  I know you guys can be better, so stop reading this, call up Rocksteady and ask them really nicely to do your next game.  Yes I am just now mentioning their name but Rocksteady deserves so much praise for their hard work and diligence in bringing to life this icon.  They really did their homework and made this an experience that should not be missed by anyone.
