Transformers is returning to gaming consoles next year, and surprisingly, it’s not returning in the way you would expect. The latest copy of Game Informer the brand new title, Transformers: Battle for Cybertron.

optimusTransformers: Battle for Cybertron is releasing in 2010, and is a whole new story in the Transformers universe. The title will not be based on any of the movies, and is mostly based off of the Transformers War Within comic book lineup.

Both the factions of the Transformers series, the Autobots and Decepticons, will feature new looks, but will look more like the original designs than the movies have shown. Gameplay is being described as a third-person shooter, with two campaigns featuring the Autobots and Decepticons. Transformation is apparently playing a bigger role in this title, so do not expect the frustration of transforming that Transformers: Revenge of the Fall brought (you can read the PS3 and PSP reviews). Transforming will also not be ground only, so expect something new.

The magazine also confirmed that multiplayer will be in the game, but not official details concerning it have been spoken of. The title is currently in development by High Moon Studios, and will be published by Activision.
