For years now, monthly NPD reports have been looked at as an indication of success by console manufacturers in the US, while gamers have used the reports as a means of debate. However, the years of battle between rival console fans every month will be coming to an end.
According to NPD Group, the company will no longer be publishing hardware sales for North America in its monthly reports. David Riley, executive director at NPD, stated the following in addition to the announcement:
“Clients can release their figures, which we can verify, but it shouldn’t be up to NPD to release these figures.”
David Riley confirmed that the company will still be publishing software sales, but will only urge hardware manufacturers to publish North American sales instead of requiring it. He also went on to say that software sales will still be released in the monthly report along with a new format.
