Winner: Dead Nation
On the surface, Dead Nation is a fairly easy concept. It’s a top-down, twin-stick, zombie-filled shooter. Throw in some upgradeable weapons and armor for a few RPG elements and call it a day. Sounds simple enough yes, but the game resonates with a nirvana-like harmony when all of these elements are brought together. It truly exemplifies the definition of synergy: more than the sum of its parts. Even while zombies may be “the thing” in pop culture nowadays, the world and universe of Dead Nation doesn’t feel like a quick cash-in on the often oversaturated undead hordes. Combining easy accessibility with a vast degree of strategy and depth, Dead Nation pushes the limits of what digitally released games are supposed to be.
