Nolan North Praises Uncharted’s Mo-Cap, Suggests Ubisoft Uses it with Assassin’s Creed

Everyone’s favorite video game voice actor Nolan North is the voice behind Uncharted’s Nathan Drake as well as Assassin’s Creed’s Desmond Miles. While both games are story-driven action adventures, Uncharted 3 outclasses the latest Assassin’s Creed in the character animation department. North recognizes this and suggests Ubisoft adopt the same tech that Naughty Dog is using.

Speaking to CVG, North points out the issues with having separate actors for body capture and voice capture , believing that both should be done by the same actor when doing mo-cap for future installments of Assassin’s Creed.

I wish it wasn’t done separately. Don’t get me wrong, the mo-cap actors do a great job, but there will always be somewhat of a disconnect when it’s done this way. After my experiences on the Uncharted franchise, where the actors do both performance and voice, I can honestly say there is absolutely a difference.

The cut-scenes are shot exactly like a film or television program. The actors interact more naturally and unique and subtle elements to the performances are captured. Don’t think for a minute that gamers don’t notice. They’re a savvy bunch.

Will Ubisoft heed the wise words of Nolan North? If they hope to keep the Assassin’s Creed franchise relevant in the years to come, then yes, they’ll need to step up their motion capture approach.
