Skullgirls Features Revealed, Comes With PS3-Exclusive Trophies, Screenshots and Story Mode Trailer Released

Reverge Labs has posted details about the upcoming fighter for PSN and XBLA, Skullgirls, in addition to screenshots and a trailer for the game.

On the PS Blog, Reverge Labs Designer/Producer/Community Manager Peter Bartholow posted details about the animated 2D fighter.

First, the game has a Story Mode, which includes the eight roster members and other characters from the vast Skullgirls universe. The other characters show up in the stories of the eight roster members, which are told with over 200 pieces of art, character portraits, and music. The Story Mode also includes “what if” scenarios unfolding across alternate timelines. Characters are true to themselves, but the events play out differently.

In the game’s Arcade Mode — a pure Arcade Mode — players can choose any team-size and make-up they like to fight rounds against the CPU until a final climactic battle, in classic fighting game tradition.

In the game’s Tutorial, the team has an extensive series of tutorials — 17 to be exact. The tutorials teach players basic and advanced concepts, from movement to hit confirmation and advanced tactics, some of which the player is helped by the A.I. to learn. The tutorial has a heavy emphasis on teaching defense as well. In Skullgirls‘ Practice Room, there’s a visual timer to display hit-stun and block-stun to help you learn combos, in addition to attack data and hitboxes.

As for online, the game features ranked and unranked multiplayer battles that utilize the GGPO networking library.

Skullgirls‘ music is composed by Michiru Yamane, the composer behind PS1 classic Castlevania: Symphony Of The Night. The game also features custom soundtrack support on PS3 due to fan requests.

Finally, the game includes four unspecified exclusive Trophies on PS3.

Bartholow says that in the coming weeks, the 8th and final character, the release date, price, and more for Skullgirls will be revealed.

The Story Mode trailer for the game talks about an ancient artifact called The Skull Heart, one which can grant a woman’s wish. However, if the woman is impure of heart, her wish will be corrupted and she will turn into an immensely powerful, twisted being of destruction known as the Skullgirl. The trailer then says: “A new Skullgirl has risen; who will defeat her and claim the Skull Heart?” It then shows the game’s revealed roster of characters while showing various scenes and gameplay footage: Filia, Cerebella, Peacock, Parasoul, Ms. Fortune, Painwheel, and Valentine. The trailer closes with a trail of defeated fighters leading up to a silhouette of a girl who appears to be the Skullgirl confronting another fighter, who is defeated and on her knees, while what appears to be a silhouette of another person watches on (or is a statue of some kind).
