Runic’s Max Schaefer Looking “Forward to the End of Boxes and Discs” in 2012

CEO of Runic Games, Max Schaefer makes no bones about it, he’s had enough of boxed games. Runic, the talented development team behind Torchlight, has done incredibly well in the digital market, and Schaefer can’t wait until this model becomes standard.

In an interview with Gaming Nexus, Schaefer responded to a question regarding what he is most excited to see happen industry-wise in 2012, saying:

I look forward to the end of boxes and discs. Kill them with fire for all I care. The retail market has historically starved developers and narrowed the market for available games. Now we need to take advantage of services like Steam with innovative pricing, business models, and games.

While it is extremely unlikely that Schaefer will get his wish any time in the immediate future (certainly not in 2012 anyway), the digital model is growing at a rapid pace and is generally seen as the inevitable future of the games industry.
