Guacamelee! Coming to PS3, Vita as Pub Fund Title

Revealed last year by About a Blob developers DrinkBox Studios, Guacamelee! looked like a rather interesting and fun title, but sadly no platforms were announced. Now, the developer has confirmed the game will be coming exclusively to the PS3 and Vita.

Described as a “Mexican-themed co-op-multiplayer dimension-swapping Metroid-vania beat-em-up platformer”, Guacamelee! is set to release early next year according to comments by COO Graham Smith. As a “Pub Fund” title, the project is partially funded by Sony, in return for platform exclusivity – crucially, IP ownership stays with the developer. About a Blob was also a pub funded game, with Graham Smith telling PSLS in an exclusive interview:

We invested a lot of our own money into About a Blob and having a guaranteed royalty from Sony when the game released helped up to offset the risk of making the game. It was definitely the best decision at the time, and I would not change it.

On the PS Blog, Smith explained the game’s plot:

Set in a world inspired by Mexican culture, Guacamelee! features a down-on-his-luck agave farmer named Juan Aguacate, who sets out to save the world when El Presidente’s Daughter is kidnapped by an Evil Charro Skeleton. The story takes place in and around a small village in Mexico, and has the player travelling through “The World of the Living” and “The World of the Dead” on his quest to rescue the girl he loves.

Guacamelee! will be playable at E3, so we’ll be sure to get our hands on the PS3 and Vita title at the event next week.
