Dishonored Creative Director Discusses Linear Games, “it’s a Circus”

Arkane Studios creative director Raf Colantonio shared his thoughts on game design, pointing out that while both open world and linear gamers have their place, the latter is like a circus.

In an interview with VG247, Colantonio spoke to the importance of more liberating game experiences, saying, “I don’t know, I mean like, I think a lot of people at Arkane do love games that liberate and let you explore and experiment with systems. That’s better than moving down a line and just shooting things that are coming at you.”

However, he went on to add that linear games still have plenty to offer as well. “But that’s OK, and I understand why the industry does that in a way. It’s so hard to make games, and people want to invest their dollars in the things that are the most impactful, and put all of their dollars in special effects – it’s a circus – that’s why people do it,” Colantonio explained.

Which type of experience do you prefer? Do appreciate the freedom that more open games give you, or does it leave you feeling lost and overwhelmed? Sound off in the comments below with your thoughts.

Dishonored is set to launch on October 9th.
