Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII Announced, 2013 Release

At its recent celebration, developer/publisher Square Enix confirmed what we’d all been given reason to suspect: Final Fantasy XIII is going to continue in 2013. Entitled Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII and set for both PS3 and Xbox 360, the game will feature the title character as a one-person wrecking crew — no other party members this time.

With the cut down to only one character, there must naturally be changes to the battle system, and Square Enix has said that it will be more of an action RPG than previous titles bearing the XIII moniker. Details are sparse, this early after the game’s announcement, but one of the game’s featured mechanics is said to be a time-travel — or rather, time loop — system whose description sounded like something out of Majora’s Mask. That is to say, one might play the game’s timeline (13 days) several times over, in order to get the desired result.

Square Enix has opened an official Facebook page for the game as well as its own website. Here are the revealed pieces of artwork:

It’s just been announced, but with a 2013 release penciled in, perhaps the Tokyo Game Show will bring some new details or media. PSLS will let you know.
