Darksiders 2 Dominates US Game Sales During August

September 7, 2012 Written by Zak Islam

The NPD Group’s report on the US game market has revealed that THQ’s Darksiders 2 sold the most copies during August, while EA enjoyed record-breaking first-week sales with Madden NFL 13.

Darksiders 2 topped the software sales chart with 247,000 copies sold. Square Enix’s Sleeping Dogs failed to replicate its commercial performance in the United Kingdom by being placed 6th on the software chart.

Activision’s Transformers: Fall of Cybertron, meanwhile, trailed behind the open-world action game at #7 with 105,000 units sold. EA’s Madden NFL 13 sold over 1.65 million units during its first seven days on sale, making it the fastest-selling Madden game this generation.

NPD’s Anita Frazier said:

These sales figures represent new physical retail sales of hardware, software and accessories, which account for roughly 50% of the total consumer spend on games. When you consider our preliminary estimate for other physical format sales in August such as used and rentals at $104MM, and our estimate for digital format sales including full game and add-on content downloads including microtransactions, subscriptions, mobile apps and the consumer spend on social network games at $391MM, we would estimate the total consumer spend in August to be $989MM.

As for hardware sales, the Xbox 360 sold more than 193,000 units, consequently securing its 20th consecutive month as the top-selling current generation console within the United States. While the PS3 sold more units than it did in July, it still trails behind the commercial performance of Microsoft’s platform.

The top 10 selling games in the US during August are as follows:

  • Darksiders II (360, PS3, PC)– 247,000 units
  • New Super Mario Bros 2 (3DS)
  • Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (3DS)
  • NCAA Football 13 (360, PS3)
  • Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes (Wii, 360, NDS, PS3, 3DS, PSV, PC)
  • Sleeping Dogs (360, PS3)
