PlayStation LifeStyle PlayList – January 12th & 13th, 2013: Phoenix Edition

Some of our longtime readers may remember a past feature we ran every week called the ‘PlayStation LifeStyle Playlist’. After falling by the wayside a couple years back, we’ve decided to bring it back for 2013, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

Every Friday, the staff here at PSLS will let you know what we’ll be playing for the weekend ahead (PlayStation-related or not), while also asking you what you’re playing this weekend. For this reboot though, we wanted to do something special. In addition to what we’re playing this weekend, you’ll also find out the games everyone at PSLS simply cannot wait to play in 2013.

But remember, this isn’t all about us, so let us know your weekend playlist and the 2013 games you want most in the comments below.

After seeing all of the Game of the Year accolades Journey has been getting from the media (namely PSLS), I think I’m going to have to revisit thatgamecompany’s enchanting adventure and see how much of an impact it has the second time around. Just getting the chance to listen to Austin Wintory’s score one more time is reason enough to replay this PSN must-have.

As far as what’s on the horizon, I can’t wait to get my hands on BioShock Infinite and The Last of Us. And I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention Quantic Dream’s Beyond: Two Souls and Telltale Games’ The Walking Dead: Season 2. Seriously, who needs new consoles? Kidding… I’m just kidding.

I think I will finally start Hard Core mode on Dead Space 2 (Can only save 3 times in the game, when you die you go back to your last save rather than your last checkpoint). I’ve been gearing up for it and waiting for a time when I have a nice 3 or 4 hour block of time that I can utilize to get to where I want my first save to be. Looks like this weekend might be the one.

This year I’m looking forward to The Last of Us the most, followed very closely by BioShock Infinite. Working towards my platinum on Dead Space 2 is also preparing me to get my hands on Dead Space 3 next month. That’s just a small sample of everything I am looking forward to. It’s looking to be a great year in 2013.

Well given that my backlog of games is going to be growing by at least 2 games each month for the first part of 2013, I am going to try to beat some of my collection. First off of my list is going to be Far Cry 3, which I actually had to bump up ahead of Hitman: Absolution and Dishonored. The random bits of buzz around the game just sparked my curiosity, so I had to try it and well, I love a good bow in a video game. Past that, I will probably get a few rounds of Black Ops 2 in, and the rest of the time will be spent working on the Bad Gamers Podcast.

I’m still debating on if I should pick up Ni No Kuni in late January, or wait till I actually get some more games checked off of my list first. Who am I kidding, I am probably going to go pre-order it this weekend. “Hello, my name is Dan, and I am addicted to buying video games.”

Jason Dunning – Lead News Writer (@Jasonad21)

Rather than going through my major backlog of games during this slow period, I started playing my already well-used copy of Advance Wars: Dual Strike and I’m currently trying to beat the extremely difficult Hard campaign (not doing very well). When I’m not yelling at my 3DS screen, I’ll be splitting my time between Jak 3 HD and the God of War: Ascension beta.

As for the games I can’t wait to get this year, those would have to be The Last of Us, Final Fantasy X HD, The Walking Dead: Season 2, and BioShock Infinite. There’s a few dozen other games that I’ll end up playing in 2013, but those four are the ones I want most.

Jesse Meikle – News Writer (@Jesse_WM)

Last year I missed out on Ghost Recon: Future Soldier due to splitting my time between Twisted Metal and Starhawk around the time it released. So, I finally picked up Future Soldier, and I’m hoping to carve out at least a nice hour or two to sit down with the sharp shooter in hand, and give it a whirl (want to play it in 3D too, if it looks nice). Also on the PS3 front, since platinum-ing PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale, I’ll be doing my damnedest to avoid playing it, however, I have a very serious, very time-consuming addiction to All-Stars; It’s like interactive meth.

My Vita is being sent out for repair, and, I will miss Golden Abyss dearly in the meantime. That game is incredibly long though, and thank Plus for cloud saving, otherwise I’m unsure if I’d be able to will myself back into it, as great as the game may be. I received the Wii U for Christmas, and after blasting through New Super Mario Bros. U, I found myself with nothing to play. I ended up grabbing Mario Galaxy for cheap, but I’m having a hard time jumping into it, the lack of trophy support is a very real, very pathetic hurdle to entry for me.

My absolute most anticipated game has to be Beyond: Two Souls. I’m most looking forward to it because there hasn’t been anything quite like Heavy Rain since its release in 2009. I’m also wildly excited for The Last of Us, God of War: Ascension, South Park: The Stick of Truth, BioShock: Infinite, and the swiftly approaching Devil May Cry.

This weekend I’m going to do some wrapping up in games I’ve been playing – finish the side missions in Far Cry 3, finish the last level or two of Halo 4 and complete Mortal Kombat on Vita at the hardest level of difficulty. Basically, I’m trying to get as much done of past games as I can before this crazy-packed year really picks up.

As for what I’m looking forward to playing this year, it has to be Uncharted 4: The Kingdom of the Krystal Steal as a launch PS4 title… oh wait, it has to be officially announced? Then The Last of Us, followed by Beyond, GTA V and BioShock. It’s a good year.

What will you be doing this weekend? Let us know in the comments below.
