Could Gran Turismo 6 Be Coming To The PS3 This Year?

With the PS4 looming on the horizon, it’s understandable to assume that we will see less and less PS3 games released and announced, but Sony did promise a 10 year lifecycle, so a few more games isn’t out of the question. We certainly expect there to be some overlap between the consoles and titles released, such as Watch_Dogs, and there will likely be some smaller games coming to the PS3 for years to come, but did anyone expect to see Gran Turismo 6 on the PS3 (or anytime at all in the next 5 years)?

In a nonchalant statement to Silcon Republic, SCEE Worldwide senior vice-president Michael Denny mentioned GT6 among a list of other Sony exclusive titles. The statement was so out of the blue, that many people didn’t believe it happened, forcing SR to release the audio:

Look at the games coming out on PlayStation 3 this year like The Last of Us, Beyond: Two Souls, GT6, and then on the third-party side of things another fantastic Assassin’s Creed, and of course GTA…

It is also interesting to note that all of the games he mentioned are releasing this year, with the exception of the unknown release date on Assassin’s Creed IV (which is heavily assumed to be this year), and he does say “this year”, which seems to both confirm Assassin’s Creed and GT6 for a 2013 release.

SCEE lent some voracity to this rumor in a response issued to Eurogamer.

In 2010, Kazunori Yamauchi confirmed that Polyphony Digital had commenced development for Gran Turismo 6. We look forward to sharing further details on this title in the near future.

With Drive Club in the pipeline as a PS4 contender to the Gran Turismo series, do you see GT6 hitting your PS3 by the end of the year? Do you think there will be a PS4 version of Gran Turismo 6 or is the power of the next-gen reserved for Matt Southern’s magnum opus? Discuss the possibility of GT6 in the comments below and listen to Anthony’s front row account of getting hit by Matt Southern’s ‘excitement’ over Drive Club on this week’s Bad Gamers.
