September 2013 NPD: PS3 #1 Selling Console, Major Nelson Offers Congratulations; Industry Sales up 27%; Grand Theft Auto V # Selling Game

While Nintendo happily sent out a press release a little earlier today letting people know that the Nintendo 3DS was the number selling system yet again in the United States during September 2013,the more important piece of information is that the PS3 finally beat the Xbox 360 for the first time in 32 months. This news (via Geoff Keighley) confirms what analysts predicted, and was helped out by the Grand Theft Auto V PS3 bundle.

In a nice move, Major Nelson himself even tweeted about the success of the PS3, something he’s previously done with The Last of Us:

The actual NPD numbers for September 2013 in the US show the industry climbing 27% year-on-year to finish at $1.079 billion, console and portable software sales shooting up 52% to over $754 million (adding in PC brings it to just a 40% increase), accessories up 2%, and hardware falling 13% to end at $183.2 million.

Of course, the majority of sales success last month is thanks to Grand Theft Auto V, which was the top-selling title during the month.

Here’s the top 10 selling games in the US at retail for the month of September 2013, including Collector’s Edition, GOTY Editions, and bundles, but not those bundled with hardware:

  1. Grand Theft Auto V
  2. Madden NFL 25
  3. NBA 2K14
  4. Diablo III
  5. FIFA 14
  6. Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix
  7. Disney Infinity
  8. NHL 14
  9. Minecraft
  10. Saints Row IV

Are you surprised to see NHL 14 and Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix in the top 10? Do you think Killzone: Mercenary should have been in the top 10? Let us know in the comments below.
