John Carmack Officially Leaves id, Comments on Oculus Rift’s Chances on PS4

Similar reports of John Carmack leaving id to serve as full-time Chief Technology Officer at Oculus VR popped up a few months ago, but it came to light how he was going to stay id, while also working at Oculus.

Clearly that didn’t work out, as id Studio Director Tim Willits said in a statement today (via GI.Biz) that Carmack has officially left the studio:

John Carmack, who has become interested in focusing on things other than game development at id, has resigned from the studio. John’s work on id Tech 5 and the technology for the current development work at id is complete, and his departure will not affect any current projects. We are fortunate to have a brilliant group of programmers at id who worked with John and will carry on id’s tradition of making great games with cutting-edge technology. As colleagues of John for many years, we wish him well.

Carmack himself addressed the news on Twitter by saying, “I wanted to remain a technical adviser for Id, but it just didn’t work out. Probably for the best, as the divided focus was challenging.”

As well, Carmack commented on the chances of seeing the Oculus Rift on PS4:

Sony would have to allow support for the sensor interface. I’m not holding my breath.

Do you ever think the Oculus Rift work with the PS4? Or will Sony’s rumored VR headset be the only option? Let us know in the comments below.
