Avalanche Studios is Working on a “Secret Game” With Square Enix

If you go by the leak that came from Avalanche Studios Founder and Creative Director Christofer Sundberg, Just Cause 3 is in development right now alongside Mad Max, with the latter scheduled for release later this year on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC. Unfortunately for anyone hoping for Just Cause 3, Avalanche Studios still hasn’t confirmed it exists yet.

In an interview published today by Polygon, Sundberg stayed coy when asked if Just Cause 3 was in development by saying, “Can’t say. It’s a huge franchise for the studio, so you shouldn’t be surprised if there is a Just Cause game in the future, but right now it’s nothing we can talk about.”

Sundberg then explained that “currently, Mad Max is the focus of the studio,” with a team of 75 people in New York also “working on a project with Square Enix.” About that New York project, he added, “It’s a game with Square Enix. A secret game.”

Further down in the interview, Just Cause 3 and the potential of multiplayer was brought up with Sundberg saying, “It’s not off the table. We have considered multiplayer for Just Cause in the past. I’ve always had the opinion that if we’re going to do it, we need to do it right.”

After talking about how they’ve seen “so many bad multiplayer modes that were never played or used,” Sundberg added:

So if we would go down that route at one point or another, then we need to do it properly. If we were to work on a future multiplayer game in the Just Cause franchise, what the mod guys [for Just Cause 2] have done has really set the bar for where we would need to aim. It’s a hard game to make a multiplayer version out of. But there are obviously other franchises that we’ve considered for multiplayer. New free-to-play games that we’ve talked about internally, definitely multiplayer is a big part of those.

Have you tried Just Cause 2 multiplayer on PC? Is Just Cause 3 definitely happening? Let us know in the comments.
