Ask PSLS: What Was Your Favorite Game From the First Half of 2014?

With the first six months of 2014 behind us, we thought it would be fun to ask the PSLS staff: What was your favorite game from the first half of 2014 (January 1 – June 30)?

Alex Co (@excaliburps)

I honestly haven’t played much this year (ironic, I know), but I think the game that captured me the most is Outlast. I love horror movies and Outlast gave you that perfect sense of feeling helpless, and being trapped inside an asylum. And if you add the fact that it was FREE for PS+ members, well, that seriously is the best cherry on that nasty piece of sundae.

On the PS4 side, it would be inFamous: Second Son. Vita would be Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment, and PS3 is Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky.

It might just be because it’s recent, but my shining spotlight so far this year is Valiant Hearts: The Great War. Wow, what an amazing, beautiful and emotionally charged game. Obviously it’s doing something right as it won our Game of the Month for June and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it land a couple of Game of the Year awards as well.

If I’m reaching further back, I would have to say I had a ton of fun with South Park: The Stick of Truth and really want more of that. Might have to go through it again for platinum soon.

I really really enjoyed Child Of Light. I never replay games and I’m TOTALLY going to replay that one. And it was really pretty.

Nothing this year has really stuck out too much for me, as we really are waiting for the holiday lineup to finally get here. But, if I had to choose one game that really stood out during the first half of the year, I would have to say inFamous: Second Son. It isn’t the best game ever made, but it is still one of the only games to release that truly matches up to the expectations of the next generation of consoles.

Since I haven’t played many games from 2014, my list of potential candidates is a short one. That being said, there is one game that I beat twice and unlocked the platinum trophy in, and that’s inFamous: Second Son. Despite its low level of difficulty and lack of a vibrant town, Second Son still delivered some awesome traversal, interesting story, and good combat, and I’m happy to give it this nod.

With the amount of great games scheduled to release in the latter half of the year though, I don’t expect Second Son to take home my Game of the Year award, but you never know.

Zarmena Khan (@Zarmena)

For me, it has to be inFamous: Second Son. The game was way more than just a visual treat unlike a lot of other next-gen games. I thoroughly enjoyed playing the role of Delsin Rowe, and getting to use the variety of powers available. Where the story stumbles, the game is pure button-mashing fun. Highly recommended!
