Famitsu has released their sales report for the first half of 2014 in Japan (December 30, 2013 – June 29, 2014), with hardware sales up 6.4% compared to this point last year and software down 3.8%, resulting in an overall market growth of 0.1%.

Looking at individual hardware first, the 3DS was far and away the #1 selling system, while the PlayStation Vita and PlayStation 4 (released on February 22) each finished above 600,000. And in a shocking turns of events, the Xbox 360 actually managed to outsell the Wii:

  1. 3DS – 1,079,166
  2. PS Vita – 639,730
  3. PS4 – 613,785
  4. PS3 – 300,386
  5. Wii U – 291,605
  6. PSP – 80,251
  7. Xbox 360 – 6,421
  8. Wii – 6,194

Dominated by 3DS games, the software charts for the first half of 2014 have one PlayStation 4 entry, Knack, which was helped out by the fact that it came bundled with consoles:

  1. Yokai Watch (3DS) – 849,027 (1,135,480 lifetime)
  2. Dragon Quest Monsters 2: Iru to Ruka no Fushigi na Fushigi na Kagi (3DS) – 739,032 (739,032 lifetime)
  3. Kirby: Triple Deluxe (3DS) – 633,695 (633,695 lifetime)
  4. Mario Kart 8 (Wii U) – 512,467 (512,467 lifetime)
  5. Pokemon X/Y (3DS) – 416,864 (4,393,693 lifetime)
  6. Puzzle and Dragons (3DS) – 411,992 (1,417,689 lifetime)
  7. Mario Party: Island Tour (3DS) – 404,666 (404,666 lifetime)
  8. Knack (PS4) – 398,685 (398,685 lifetime)
  9. Mobile Suit Gundam: Extreme VS Full Boost (PS3) – 367,354 (367,354 lifetime)
  10. Dark Souls 2 (PS3) – 335,226 (335,226 lifetime)

Adding up the lifetime totals for each piece of hardware, the PlayStation Portable is in 1st with nearly 20 million, followed by the 3DS and Wii. With the PlayStation Vita 85,000 units away from 3 million, it should cross that plateau either this month or in August:

  1. PSP –19,688,744 lifetime
  2. 3DS – 15,773,177 lifetime
  3. Wii –12,744,273 lifetime
  4. PS3 –9,868,886 lifetime
  5. PS Vita –2,914,869 lifetime
  6. Wii U –1,810,032 lifetime
