Ask PSLS: Telltale Games Franchise Adaptation Wishlist

Ask PSLS is a feature that sources questions from our community of readers via TwitterFacebookthe forums, and even your emails. Our question this week comes in the form of an email from Cote, who says:

“I read your review for The Wolf Among Us and I just finished The Walking Dead Season 2 episode 4. This got me thinking about what other franchises Telltale Games should adapt. I think Sin City would be a perfect property for a Telltale series. I asked a friend, and he said he would love to see an Orange is the New Black series. My question is what franchise would you like to see Telltale adapt into an episodic series. They have adapted comics, tv shows, books, and over video games, so just about anything is possible.

Season three of The Walking Dead was recently confirmed, and Telltale still has Tales From the Borderlands and Game of Thrones upcoming, but the PSLS staff still wants to let Telltale Games know what franchises we would like to see them tackle next.

I’m with Dan here [Ed. note – See his response below]. I wanted them to do Game of Thrones, but since that’s already happening, I’m open to them doing something else. I’d prefer for the studio to do a straight-up horror game. Imagine Bram Stoker’s Dracula done a la Telltale. Maybe Nightmare on Elm Street? With how Telltale has aced dialogue, pacing and making us feel something for the characters, a horror game would be awesome.

Maybe that or Sherlock Holmes or BBC’s Sherlock? The gameplay the studio has certainly would fit the bill.

I love nearly anything by J.J. Abrams, so the first thought that comes to mind is LOST. Then I realized that LOST is perfect the way it is and I wouldn’t want to disrespect it by reopening that world. For this reason, I turn to Fringe, another incredible work by J.J. Abrams, and something that has a huge variety of possibilities for where Telltale could carve out their own corner of that universe. The series may be over, but I have always wanted more from it and Telltale could be the perfect ones to provide the additional stories from that world.

Keeping in the J.J. Abrams vein, Alias and Revolution could also create great scenarios for Telltale to play with. In fact, even if Abrams were to collaborate with Telltale to come up with a completely original work, that would probably turn out amazing. Can we arrange a chance meeting in an elevator with these two parties?

I know these would never happen but I would love to see some outside of the box thinking. Give me a Telltale game that follows some classic movie series like Beverly Hills Cop, Die Hard, or Lethal Weapon. Other than that, I actually really like Dan’s idea of a certain beloved space series… and I cannot believe I just thought about this… How about we dip into classic TV shows like Saved by the Bell or Fresh Prince of Bel-Air???? Instant classics!

I love Alex’s idea of Nightmare on Elm Street! A horror genre would do really well with this style of game. After all, if it’s not a fantastical and stressful story, you risk playing a soap opera as a game.  I don’t really want any of my own favorite universes to be a Telltale game because I don’t necessarily like how they might handle them, but I like when they work with things like Fables that pique my interest in those franchises that are unknown to me.

My first thought was Game of Thrones, but that is already in the works. So, after giving it much thought, I would actually like to see them take on the Firefly universe. With the number of fans still looking for content based around the series, and the fact that Telltale Games does some fantastic work, I could only see something like that becoming a big success and bringing in a slew of new gamers to the industry.

I am currently watching an internationally acclaimed Turkish series called Muhteşem Yüzyıl (Magnificent Century). It’s about the reign of Ottoman ruler Sultan Suleiman, who made an appearance in Assassin’s Creed: Revelations as well. It focuses on Suleiman’s military conquests and his private life, especially his relationship with his alluring Ukrainian wife, Hurrem, who is known to be the driving force behind a lot of the Sultan’s political decisions. With elements of war, passion, deception, and intimate relationships, it could make for a perfect episodic series. I’d love to play that.

…and you know what? The X-Files would make an awesome Telltale series. I want to play as Scully.

What series do you want to see Telltale Games do a take on? Should Telltale use their talents to bring back a beloved universe that fans have been missing? Remember to send us questions for Ask PSLS on TwitterFacebookthe forums, and email. Be sure to check back next Wednesday to see what question the PSLS staff will be answering!
