Far Cry 4 Creative Director Says “Linear Story Games are Really Going to Suffer”

In an interview with Xbox: The Official Magazine, Far Cry 4‘s creative director Alex Hutchinson mentioned that he thinks “linear story games are really going to suffer” in today’s marketplace.

Of course, Far Cry 4 will not be a linear game, but will feature a large map that players can freely move about in. Being able to watch gameplay of the upcoming title on Twitch will make it more appealing than watching videos of linear games, Hutchinson says, because people will be able to see players “doing completely different things,” as opposed to all players walking through the same levels.

I think linear story games are really going to suffer in the modern marketplace. They’re already super high-quality, and we’re already seeing their audiences migrate to the big open world games. If I open my friends list and see everybody on the same mission, doing the same thing… I think that’s nowhere near as strong a sales pitch as opening your friends list and seeing 40 people doing completely different things.

What do you think about Hutchinson’s claims? Do you still appreciate linear games, or do you like open-world games better? Far Cry 4 will be coming out on November 18 for PlayStation 4, PS3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, and PC.
