Kingdom Hearts III Creation Discussed, Bumps in the Road Explained

In an interview with IGN, Kingdom Hearts III co-director Tai Yasue talked about the ongoing creation of the game, citing numerous trials and tribulations that he and the rest of the team had to face.

Yasue began by talking about how prior to only recently, Kingdom Hearts III was not being worked on by a full team. Instead, the team was split between making Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMIX, which was released last month, and the upcoming title. While Yasue mentioned that he doesn’t think that there was ever a slowdown, he did say that now the project will begin moving much faster now that both teams have been united.

Another issue that had slowed the creation of the upcoming game down was the decision to switch to the Unreal 4 engine, which took a little while to get used to.

UE4 was introduced and there’s a lot of stuff that we didn’t have to do previously, like lighting and shading, which we now have to do. The technology is vastly different but it’s exhilarating to have all this stuff to learn. There’s so much we can do, the consoles are so fast.

Some of the videos with Sora, with individual strands of his hair moving? That stuff is a real leap in technology. I can’t make any announcements on the Disney worlds but, even there, there are so many that we’re studying. They do a lot of new stuff as well so we’re figuring out how to incorporate them as well.

As if these two issues weren’t enough, Yasue also mentioned that a lot of time had to be spent studying the ever-expanding Disney universe. While he could not say which Disney worlds would be included in the game, he did say that “any world that looks special is definitely a consideration.”

What do you think of all the issues and time consuming matters that Yasue and the rest of the team had to face? Are you excited for Kingdom Hearts III to finally come out?
