Wolfenstein: The Old Blood Includes Replayable Nightmare Levels

When Wolfenstein: The Old Blood comes to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC this week as a digital title for $19.99/£14.99/€19.99, it will mark the return of Nightmare levels, which were an easter egg in The New Order.

In The Old Blood, there will be nine Nightmare levels in total – one for each chapter in the game – and as MachineGames Managing Director and Executive Producer Jerk Gustafsson revealed, “The entire first episode of Wolf 3D can be found by carefully exploring the contents of The Old Blood.”

This time around, MachineGames improved the Nightmare levels by making them replayable. Whenever you wake up from a Nightmare – be it from dying, complete the level, or using the ‘wake up’ option – you’ll be able to go back to bed and enter the level again.

While the levels themselves are accurate to the original, the placements of objects and types of objects has been tweaked for gameplay’s sake. Enemy placement is fairly accurate as well, but don’t be surprised if AI behavior is different due to the differences in code.

Jerk continued by talking about how much content from the original game the Nightmare levels cover:

The entire Episode One, including the boss fight with Hans Grösse and the secret level (Floor 10). It just fits perfectly, with one Nightmare level placed in each of The Old Blood chapters.

Episode One of Wolfenstein 3D is also conveniently named “Escape from Wolfenstein.” This means you get the amazing opportunity to escape Castle Wolfenstein twice when playing through The Old Blood.

If you pre-ordered The Old Blood, the nearly 40GB file is available for pre-load on PS4.

Will you seek out every single Nightmare level?
