Deus Ex: Mankind Divided’s Boss Fights Will Cater to Different Play Styles, Says Eidos Montreal

If you were put off by the boss fights in Deus Ex: Human Revolution due to their difficulty, you’ll be pleased to note that Eidos Montreal wants to give players more freedom when it comes to boss encounters in Mankind Divided. Back in April, Executive Game Director Jean-Francois Dugas assured fans that the developer won’t be repeating the mistakes it made in Human Revolution‘s boss fights. Now, Gameplay Director Patrick Fortier has said that the studio will support different play styles so players will be able to deal with boss fights through combat, stealth, or even by talking to the enemy.

It’s all about supporting all the different play aspects. That was the main thing that was missing from the boss fights. Thematically, I think they were interesting, but certain players found a challenge there that wasn’t really catered to them.

[In Mankind Divided] there are ways to stealth them, there are ways to beat them in combat and there are conversations you can have that maybe give you a different means of dealing with the situation altogether.

Narrative Director Mary DeMarle added:

You can also decide to do it lethally or not. For Human Revolution, because of the way we designed it, [the bosses] always died in the cutscenes. You had no choice. But we rectified that in the Missing Link DLC, and we’ve rectified it in this game.
