Showing why it’s the top-selling NBA video game simulation series since 2008, NBA 2K16 has shipped over four million copies worldwide in the first week of release, 2K announced today.

Along with its commercial success and critical praise, NBA 2K16 also saw digital sales double compared to NBA 2K15, while the number of games played online nearly tripled when compared to last year’s title.

Greg Thomas, President of developer Visual Concepts, talked about the strong launch:

Our goal was simple, make NBA 2K16 the most playable, authentic basketball experience ever. The development team demonstrated tremendous dedication to recreating every nuance of the sport both on and off-court, which has been the driving force behind our early success.

Matt Holt, NBA Vice President of Global Merchandising, added:

Congratulations to 2K Sports on their early record-breaking success with NBA 2K16. Each year, 2K has continued to raise their commitment to innovation, authenticity and gameplay – bringing fans the very best with the NBA 2K franchise.
