Yu Suzuki Thinking About 30fps for Shenmue 3, 60fps “Might Be Too Difficult”

Currently scheduled for release in December 2017 on PlayStation 4 and PC after receiving over $6 million on Kickstarter, Shenmue 3 may end up running at 30 frames-per-second.

Speaking with DualShockers, Creator Yu Suzuki said development is “going very well,” with the team testing the Unreal Engine 4 and about to undergo testing for maps of the three areas that will make up Shenmue 3.

Asked which system is leading development, he explained:

It’s not so simple. The prototypes are being made on PC, but then production shifts to PS4, and then to PC again. It’s like PC, PS4, PC. It really depends on which phase of development we are in.

As for frame-rate, Suzuki says he’s “thinking about” 30fps for the moment, as “60 might be too difficult, but I’m not sure yet.”

In terms of changes with Shenmue 3, it will include dynamic weather, with Suzuki wanting to improve the quality compared to Shenmue 2. He adds, “Also the mornings and evenings, the lighting of sunsets and sunrises will be really beautiful.”

Elsewhere, you’ll find simpler controls and more cinematic combat that “will look more like a movie,” but there will be areas of the map you can’t access and “you won’t be able to explore everything.”

Suzuki then discussed the new characters in Shenmue 3:

There will be many new characters. There are the four main bosses. There will be Lan Di from the previous games, and two more fighters.

The fourth, on the other hand is a strategist, and she will using more cunning than head on fighting. She is an extremely beautiful and sexy, but cruel woman. I briefly introduced her image in Shenmue II, but in Shenmue III she will have a proper and extensive role.

Over on Twitter, the Shenmue 3 account wrote, “Progress update coming next week. Testing shots coming in – Ryo is back in action!” Suzuki said they’ll be releasing new information to backers every single month.
