Uncharted 4 Beta Runs at 900p and A “Largely Stable” 60fps, Says Analysis

With the Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End multiplayer beta now available, Digital Foundry posted their analysis of the beta, revealing that it runs at 900p and a “largely stable” 60fps, but it did drop to as low as 45 frames-per-second.

Naughty Dog is targeting 900p/60fps with the final version of Uncharted 4’s multiplayer, and Digital Foundry says the work-in-progress beta improves upon many issues they experienced with the Paris Games Week build:

Despite being at the mercy of the same five versus five chaos, drops remain here, but it’s safe to say the bulk of the experience now unfolds at a smoother 60fps rate. There’s a gain in overall stability that keeps the action lodged at this top figure – and the flow of play feels all the better for it. Especially in the island map, we’ve yet to experience the same sharp stutters of the last build in a similar spot.

While it runs at 60fps most of the time, the most obvious drops were to around 50fps when using relic powers or special items, though they “aren’t frequent enough to distract.” When playing on the Madagascar stage and using a combination of relics and sidekicks, there was a drop to 45fps.

The single-player portion of Uncharted 4 will run at 1080p/30fps, and Digital Foundry highlighted some of the differences you’ll find in the 900p multiplayer:

The more noticeable of these pare-backs is its less liberal use of physics. Across the market stalls there’s an obvious reduction in the density of objects – though its small smattering of stools and bottles still knock over as you’d expect. We’re also missing the mud slick effect building up on Drake’s clothes, where one segment of the map lets us simulate the mudslide sequence of that E3 demo. Otherwise, the aesthetic holds up; a recognizable facsimile of the solo experience, and yet clearly a domain built for competitive play – where each of its quarters is easy to tell apart.

Naughty Dog still has a few months to optimize the multiplayer further, with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End launching on March 18, 2016.
