EA’s Unravel Trademark Turned Down By USPTO

The United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has turned down EA’s trademark application for its upcoming title, Unravel, because it bears resemblance to a board game called “Beary’s Unravel Game.” Spotted by a NeoGAF user, a USPTO statement declared that “it is likely a potential consumer would be confused, mistaken, or deceived as to the source of the goods and/or services of the applicant and registrant.”

An abandonment notice was sent to EA on January 19, but the publisher has said in a statement to GameWatcher that failure to secure the trademark will not impact the game’s release on February 9.

Whether EA will tweak the name or not remains to be seen.
