Ninja Theory’s Celtic Actioner Hellblade Gets New Title, Stunning Cinematic Trailer

Developer Ninja Theory has today shed new light on its Celtic actioner, Hellblade, with a stunning cinematic confirming that the mythic adventure title will be released on PS4 as Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.

Senua, of course, refers to the lead heroine in Ninja Theory’s new IP. Brought to life via Melina Juergens’ motion capture performance, Senua is described as a Celtic warrior “who journeys into Viking heartland while struggling with trauma and psychosis.”

Dominic Matthews, a member of Ninja Theory’s tight-knit development team, took to PlayStation Blog to outline the character’s damaged psyche, and how that filters into Hellblade‘s gameplay.

“It is important for us to portray the physical, emotional, and mental trials of her quest in both the character model and the representation of her reality. An example of this is the voices that Senua hears in the scene. These voices have been recorded binaurally which means that if you listen to them with headphones on they will sound as if they are in the 3D space around you.”

Alongside today’s title change and cinematic is a behind-the-scenes featurette highlighting the creative process behind Hellblade and, specifically, the technology used to create Senua with remarkable fidelity. Embedded below, the video showcases  Melina Juergens motion-capturing in real time.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice has been slated for a PS4 and PC release later in 2016.
