In their latest earnings release, Sony revealed that 17.7 million PlayStation 4s were shipped this last fiscal year (FY15 ended March 31, 2016), up from 14.8 million in the previous fiscal year (FY14). This brings the PS4 to 40 million shipped in its lifetime so far.

Sales in the Game & Network category also saw an increase of 11.8% to ¥1,551.9 trillion, with Sony saying it was due to increase PS4 hardware sales and PS4 software sales (including digital sales). It’s partially offset by a decline in PlayStation 3 hardware and software sales though.

Network sales, meanwhile, increased by more than 50% year-on-year.

They said of their Game & Network segment:

Sales increased 11.8% year-on-year (a 10% increase on a constant currency basis) to 1,551.9 billion yen (13,734 million US dollars). This significant increase was primarily due to increases in PS4 software sales, including sales through the network, and PS4 hardware unit sales, partially offset by a decrease in PlayStation 3 software and hardware sales.

Operating income increased 40.6 billion yen year-on-year to 88.7 billion yen (785 million US dollars). This significant increase was primarily due to the increase in PS4 software sales and PS4 hardware cost reductions as well as the absence in the current fiscal year of an 11.2 billion yen write-down of PS Vita and PS TV components recorded in the previous fiscal year. Partially offsetting the increase in operating income were the negative impact of the appreciation of the US dollar, reflecting a high ratio of US dollar-denominated costs, and the decrease in PS3 software sales.

Sony revealed in March that more than 36 million PS4s had been sold-through to consumers.
