House: Games Developed for PS4 Neo Require a “Small But Manageable” Amount of Extra Work

Earlier today, Sony Interactive Entertainment President Andrew House revealed to the Financial Times that the PS4 Neo is indeed real, but it won’t be making an appearance at E3 2016 next week.

Elsewhere in the interview, House said the “high-end PS4” will be more expensive than the current $349.99 model, will offer ultra-high definition 4K resolution and improved graphics, and is designed to target hardcore gamers and those with a 4K TV. When asked about the price or release date for Neo, the Financial Times says he refused to answer.

As for the decision to make a new PS4, House says they saw an opportunity to deliver “some additional benefits” to players and developers within the console’s lifecycle. “The consumer is attuned to a different cadence of innovation in technology thanks in great part for the upgrades cadence on mobile phones or PCs,” he added.

On the developer side of things, it was reported earlier this year that most were unhappy with the extra costs and planning associated with the hardware revision. According to House though, developers should see a “seamless” experience between the two consoles, and there’s only a “small but manageable” amount of extra work required when making a game for both models.

All PS4 games will support the standard PS4 and Sony anticipates “all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4.” According to reports, the PS4 Neo will have a ‘Neo Mode‘ where games must run at 1080p or higher.

When the PS4 Neo does launch, it will be “standalone profitable” from day one.
