New No Man’s Sky Trailer Is All About Exploration

To answer the question of what you actually do in No Man’s Sky when it launches on August 9 in North America and August 10 in Europe for PlayStation 4 and PC, Sony and Hello Games will be releasing a series of four videos, focusing on the four key pillars to the game: explore, trade, fight, and survive.

In the first video, Explore, you’ll get a quick look at the universe, which includes 18 quintillion planets, limitless variety, and endless discovery as you journey to the center of it. “As the discoverer of flora, fauna, and even planets, you’ll be able to name your discoveries and claim them to be seen by fellow space pioneers,” Sony’s Josh Sepielli adds.

The video’s description goes on to say it would take five billion years to explore all the planets – and that’s if you visited a new one every second:

There are 18 quintillion planets in the game. Even if each planet was visited at a rate of one per second, it would take five billion years to explore them all – by which the Sun in our solar system would have burnt out, essentially giving the game a near infinite number of worlds to explore!

To help guide players through such a vast number of locations No Man’s Sky has an overarching goal of reaching the centre of the universe, where there are more bountiful resources and more challenging locations to discover. This, however, is just a guide, and players are free to explore the game however they like.

Expect more No Man’s Sky Pillar videos in the coming weeks.
