EA Registers Trademark for New Need for Speed Title

Electronic Arts may have placed the Need for Speed franchise on a one-year hiatus — not for the first time, mind you — but it appears the publisher is quietly prepping for the next installment in the long-running racing series.

According to a trademark filing spotted by Power Up Gaming, EA and presumably developer Ghost Games are working on Need for Speed Arena. The listing, which was filed to the European Union Intellectual Property Office, reveals the Arena title, and that the application covers a range of goods and services, most notably video game software and online video games.

What’s unclear is whether Need for Speed Arena is a mainline entry into the franchise, or some form of mobile spinoff in the vein of Need for Speed: No Limits.

The most recent entry into the series, simply titled Need for Speed, was released last year for PS4, Xbox One and PC. But what do you make of this trademark filing?
