2011’s PlayStation 3 Ad Director is in Talks for Mortal Kombat Movie Reboot

Simon McQuoid might not be a household name but PlayStation owners will probably remember his work on the PS3 ad “Michael” in 2011. According to Variety, he’s now in talks to direct the Mortal Kombat movie reboot for New Line.

The movie is being produced by James Wan (Furious 7, Saw) alongside Michael Clear, Todd Garner and Jeremy Stein. Lawrence Kasanoff is serving as executive producer, with Greg Russo penning the script.

Although 1995’s Mortal Kombat grossed $70 million at the domestic box office, its sequel Mortal Kombat: Annihilation didn’t do well, leading Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment to scrap plans for future installments. However, the company ended up reviving the series with Mortal Kombat: Legacy.

As for McQuoid, who’s an Australian filmmaker, Variety reports that he’s “the most in-demand commercials director in business.” Besides PlayStation, he’s worked for Halo, Range Rover, Beats by Dre and other popular brands.
