Uncharted 4 Survival: Wave-Based Co-Op Mode Arrives in December

A wave-based mode that you can play solo or in co-op with up to two friends, Survival is coming to Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End in mid-December, Naughty Dog announced today.

First hinted at in the multiplayer roadmap, Survival lets you face 50 waves of increasingly powerful enemies on 10 maps. After likening it to Co-Op Arena from Uncharted 2 and Uncharted 3, Designer Vinit Agarwal added, “We’ve built upon and evolved the core gameplay experience with an entirely new level of depth, challenge, and variety. From new enemy types and powerful new bosses to a dedicated progression system and expansive upgradable arsenal, Survival is all about strategy, camaraderie, and skill.”

Enemies in Survival include Shoreline mercenaries, heavily armored Brutes, Snipers, Hunters, and more that get more precise, aggressive, and better as you progress. Completing 10 waves will get you a boss battle against a Pirate Warlord, with Agarwal saying, “Inspired by the story of Uncharted 4, some of the Founders of Libertalia have arrived to hunt you down with powerful Mystical attacks.”

In order to reach wave 50, you’ll also have to complete objectives such as defending a certain area, collecting treasures within a time limit, or taking out marked enemies, while modifiers might make it so only pistols, headshots, or melee attacks do damage.

By defeating enemies and completing objectives in Survival, you’ll earn in-game cash that can be used to unlock weapons and gear from arsenal crates on the map. Additionally, as you rank up, upgrades, boosters, new items, and vanity items can be unlocked, but “enemies will adapt to your increased firepower and there are multiple difficulties to choose from.” If you manage to beat Survival on Hard Mode, you’ll unlock Crushing Mode.

Survival will be playable at PSX on December 3 and 4.
