Research Firm Claims PSVR Now Market Leader in Virtual Reality

Thanks to the significant PS4 install base and a relatively affordable price tag, Sony’s PlayStation VR currently holds the lion’s share of the virtual reality market, according to research firm 01consulting.

As reported by VentureBeat, it’s claimed Sony’s device accounts for 30 percent of the current market, putting PSVR comfortably ahead of the Facebook-owned Oculus Rift (11 percent) and Valve’s HTC Vive (6 percent). In terms of low-end offerings, the budget Google Cardboard and Daydream reportedly account for 8 percent, while Samsung and its Gear headsets hold 7 percent. These figures are based on “evaluated and estimated product sales for over 30 companies and 40 products globally through revenues and units sold/used for each of the vendors.”

News of 01consulting’s report comes a week after fellow research firm SuperData slashed its PSVR sales projections going into the holiday season. Initially estimated to reach 2.6 million, the company now claims Sony’s device will struggle to break past 750k.
