PS4 Platinum Wireless Headset Gets a January 12, 2017 Release Date

The PlayStation Platinum Wireless Headset is releasing on January 12, 2017 in North America and January 16, 2017 in Europe, Sony Interactive Entertainment announced today. It’s priced at $159.99 USD/$199.99 CAD/€179/£129.

A high-end gaming headset designed for PlayStation 4 – but also compatible with PlayStation VR, mobile devices, and other devices using the included 3.5mm audio cable – Sony says the Platinum Wireless Headset “boasts premium construction and materials for extra comfort, as well as enhanced highly positional 7.1 virtual surround sound powered by SIE’s proprietary 3D audio technology.” You’ll also find multi-position, hidden noise-cancelling microphones for clearer chat.

As for 3D audio mode support, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End will receive a patch next month that adds it, and you can learn more about the feature in the above video.

A “variety of upcoming games” will also support 3D Audio, including MLB The Show 17, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and Days Gone. Product Marketing Manager Steve Schwartz added, “For titles that do not have 3D audio support, the Platinum Wireless Headset has an enhanced version of 7.1 virtual surround sound. So even in games without 3D audio the Platinum Wireless Headset will have better virtual surround sound.”

In terms of the differences between the Gold and Platinum headsets, Schwartz said, “Other than 3D audio there are other great features, larger 50mm drivers tuned for 3D audio, more advanced, noise-cancelling mics, and improved battery life. In games with 7.1 virtual surround sound it also sounds better because we can leverage the horsepower of our 3D audio technology.”

Asked if it will work with PlayStation 3, Schwartz replied, “Yes it will work wirelessly with with [sic] PS3 systems but you will not be able to take advantage of some of the more advanced features.”
