2016 Was the “Year of Technological Innovation” in the Games Industry, Says Square Enix President

Square Enix‘s President and Representative Director, Yosuke Matsuda, penned a new year’s letter yesterday in which he reflected upon 2016 as the “year of technological innovation” in the industry.

Matsuda is referring to what he calls “the dawn of” Virtual and Augmented Reality devices, noting that Square Enix has moved forward with research and development efforts in these new fields. “2016 was also a year in which we saw the potential for the fusion of powerful IP with new technologies to give rise to new experiences and for major successes to be born of such combinations,” he wrote.

Elsewhere, Matsuda mentioned that smartphone ownership in Japan now extends to over 67 percent of the population, making it not only an “essential communications tool” but also “a versatile gaming console.” However, he also made note of the increasing demand for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, stating that Sony’s console has sold faster than all its previous iterations.

Going forward, Square Enix eyes continued diversity in its portfolio in order to cater to various markets and market segments. Matsuda said, “By leveraging new technologies and providing new experiences, we can not only breathe new life into existing contents, but also generate new contents thanks to the new avenues through which our creators are able to exercise their talents.”
