Ed Boon Talks Injustice 2 Gear System, Character Roster

Earlier this week NetherRealm Studios officially announced Robin for Injustice 2, and gave details on an upcoming beta for the superhero fighting game. That’s not all the news, though, as the Chicago-based developer also held a livestream on Twitch (view the archive here) where Tyler Lansdown, Derek Kirtzic and Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon answered questions from fans.

One of the main topics discussed was the game’s gear system. It was revealed that the gear players get will be randomly generated, which means that players won’t have the same gear. This gear system will allow players to change character’s stats and change special moves. Boon realizes that competitive players are worried about the system, and that there will be a tournament mode that disables the equipment. He also revealed that there won’t be any gear sold as DLC, and that online play will allow players to choose opponents that either use or don’t have any gear.

As far as characters go, Boon said he was excited about getting to include more “unique characters” that are more obscure in the DC universe. He also said that every returning character will have new special moves, and that DLC characters from the original game have a chance of returning in the sequel. On the topic of DLC, Boon also revealed that he’d “be surprised if they didn’t” have third-party characters pop up as DLC. Finally, he revealed that the game will feature the largest roster of any game done by NetherRealm both in terms of on-disc and DLC characters.

Injustice 2 is set to release later this year. For more details, check out the very interesting Twitch stream.
