The Division Update 1.6 to Introduce Cosmetic Microtransactions

Buried in Ubisoft’s breakdown of The Division update 1.6 was mention of a new form of cosmetic microtransactions headed to the post-pandemic shooter.

First spotted by PC Gamer, the currency is known as Premium Credits and can be purchased through the in-game store. Unlike, say, Division Credits, Premium tokens can only be purchased using real money, and are used to unlock cosmetic items — and cosmetic items only — from a specific in-game vendor. Pricing is still to be announced in full, though Ubisoft’s footnote describes the currency as so: “We’ll also be revamping the in-game store, adding a new currency and extending the range of items available for purchase at a special vendor.”

They’ll co-exist with The Division‘s other currencies, including Phoenix Credits, Dark Zone Funds and standard Division Credits, and Ubisoft’s post goes on to reveal:

“We want to preserve a fair game environment and would not allow for players to get any form of competitive advantage based on money they spent on Premium Credits.”

“While we want to offer more opportunities for you to customize your characters, we also need to find a way to do so sustainably without impacting the resources available for the main game. Monetizing them will allow us to keep creating more vanity option independently without any impact on the rest of the game production.”

There’s no word as yet of when update 1.6 will go live. The Division was the 3rd best-selling game of 2016 in the United States. The shooter’s third expansion, Last Stand, will launch simultaneously for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
