For Honor Game Director: We Never Intended For You to Unlock Everything in the Game

Addressing a post from Reddit user bystander007, who estimated that it would take $732 or 2.5 years to unlock all of the content in For Honor, Game Director Damien Kieken said that Ubisoft never intended for players to unlock everything.

“We never had an intention for you to unlock everything in the game,” he said beginning at 23:30 of the above video. Kieken then continued by bringing up World of Warcraft as an example of a game where you wouldn’t try to unlock everything:

For us, that doesn’t really make any sense… We applied RPG mechanics on top of a fighting game, in a PvP environment. But it’s like in an RPG, let’s say in World of Warcraft, you would never try to unlock everything for all the characters of the whole game. Same thing in any MOBAs, you’re not trying to unlock all the content for all the heroes in your game.

Kieken added that, before launch, they expected most players would play one to three characters (which has proven to be true), and “all the design is based around that.” As for the cosmetic items, Kieken says they’re “really, for us, our end-game content: it’s the things we want you to unlock after playing several weeks.”

A little later on in the video, Kieken says they never anticipated a player who would want to unlock everything in the game, “because that’s not how the game is used today and is played today by our players.”

Towards the end of his statement on the matter, Kieken said Ubisoft is listening to the feedback from players and looking at the data, and there are still hundreds of people working on For Honor.

Earlier today, For Honor received update 1.04.
