The Witcher TV Series Is Being Developed and Produced By Netflix

Netflix announced today that they’re developing and producing an English language drama series based on The Witcher fantasy saga from author Andrzej Sapkowski, which spans eight novels and story collections.

Sapkowski, who will serve as a creative consultant on the series, said:

I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over 30 years writing. I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.

Executive Producers on The Witcher TV series include Sean Daniel (The Mummy, The Expanse) and Jason Brown (The Expanse) from the Sean Daniel Company and Tomek Baginski and Jarek Sawso from Polish animation and film studio Platige Image. Baginski, who directed the intro cinematics for all three Witcher games, will “also direct at least one episode of each season.”

Daniel and Brown said:

The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny and constantly surprising and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.

Baginski and Sawso added:

There is a moral and intellectual depth in these books which goes beyond genre. It is a story about today and today’s challenges, hidden under a fantasy cover. It is a story about us, about the monster and the hero inside all of our hearts.

The Witcher video games developer CD Projekt Red, who doesn’t appear to be involved with the TV series at all, told Eurogamer, “We wish this project all the best, and are looking forward to watching the series on Netflix!”
