Ubisoft Stockholm Announced, Will Work on Avatar & Other AAA Games

Led by Patrick Bach, former General Manager of EA DICE (Battlefield, Star Wars Battlefront), Ubisoft announced today that they’ve opened a new studio in Stockholm, Sweden. This is the third major studio the company has opened in the last four months.

Ubisoft Stockholm will collaborate with Massive Entertainment, which is located in Malmö, Sweden, “on the development of AAA games including the recently announced Avatar game.” Ubisoft is expecting to hire 100 people within the first two years, and recruiting has already started (Massive is hiring 200 people).

Ubisoft says the two studios will work together quite closely:

The new Stockholm studio will plug into Ubisoft’s cross-studio collaboration approach, in which Ubisoft studios from across the globe work together on AAA game development, with each studio providing distinct contributions based on their areas of expertise. Sweden is also home to Massive in Malmö, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, and was acquired by Ubisoft in 2008. It has since grown to become one of the biggest Swedish development studios, and is looking to grow even further by recruiting for 200 new positions over the coming two year period. The two Swedish studios will work together particularly closely.

Bach explained what the studio will focus on:

The focus is to create great games of course, including working with Massive on the recently announced Avatar game. To make great games you need a great team, a clear vision, great working conditions and a company backing you and supporting those pillars. I think we’ve got all those ingredients combined to make this studio a success, and offer something new on the dev scene in Stockholm.

Ubisoft has more than 30 in-house studios and more than 10,000 team members.
