Final Fantasy XV Director Says DLC Will Explain Plot Holes

In a recent interview with Kotaku’s Jason Schreier, Final Fantasy XV director Hajime Tabata was asked the ending of the game. More specifically, he was asked about a fairly big plot point that’s never really addressed afterward, and if we would see any clarification on the matter.

Spoilers for the ending of Final Fantasy XV follow. Read at your own discretion.

At the end of Final Fantasy XV, Noctis sacrifices his own life to prevent the antagonist, Ardyn, from destroying the world. The last image the game gives us is the image of Noctis kissing his fiancé, Luna, in the afterlife. However, what we don’t ever see is what happens to Gladiolus, Prompto, and Ignis. All three of Noctis’s friends are left behind to fend off waves of monsters in a last stand of sorts. Are they alive? Did they sacrifice themselves along with Noctis? We’re never really sure.

According Tabata, however, all is well, and the group of friends is actually alive. While he said we’ll probably never see any future downloadable content that shows what happens to the trio, he did reveal that their ending would likely not be a happy one. “Obviously it’s very hard to pinpoint what exactly makes a certain person or character happy,” he said. “The fact that they were a party of four and one of the party is no longer there, it’ll probably be hard to say that they’re fully happy. That said, they needed to do what they needed to do, so they had that sense of purpose. And I’m sure they’re very proud of what they’ve achieved and what they’ve overcome. So in that sense maybe that overlaps with how we feel towards the game itself.”

Tabata didn’t go into details on any of the other threads the game leaves untouched, including who Noctis’s mother is, or why the gang cared so much for Jared. Tabata acknowledged that some of the game’s story felt a bit lacking at times, saying “Understandably within the main game there were certain aspects that lacked explanation, and that’s been some of the feedback we received from fans.”

Thankfully, there is a chance to fix some of the loose threads the game has left, and one of Tabata’s hopes is that the downloadable content for the game can be used to patch any plot holes that might be found within the game. “We’re continuously growing as developers as well,” he said. “And so we’re finally at a point where we’re also able to try to challenge ourselves to tackle some of those missing pieces.”

Final Fantasy XV is now available for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.
