Sonic Mania Helps Double Sega’s Physical Game Sales

Sega Sammy Holdings has released its financial statement for the six months ended September 30, reporting an increase in net sales and operating profit.

Net sales amounted to ¥194.7 billion, which is an increase of 14.9 percent from ¥169.5 billion attributed to the same period last year. Operating income stood at ¥26.8 billion, up 74.5 percent from last year.

¥10.1 billion of the operating income came from Sega’s Entertainment Contents division, which video games are a part of. The company noted that Sonic Mania‘s strong reception was one of the factors that helped to double physical game sales from 4,650 thousand copies last year to 8,650 thousand copies this year. The report reads:

In the packaged game software field, sales amounted to 8,650 thousand copies (4,650 thousand copies for the same period in the previous fiscal year) thanks to the strength of the new title Sonic Mania, which earned the highest Metascore in the new titles of the Sonic series released in the past 15 years. In addition, the Group launched Total War: WARHAMMER 2, a new title of the Total War series, following its popular predecessor in PC games.

Sonic Mania released in August, and currently holds an average of 86% on Metacritic (PS4). In case you missed it, make sure to check out our review of the game.
