Eidos Montreal Head Says the Studio Isn’t Abandoning Single-Player Games

The publication of Eidos Montreal’s updated vision statement, which placed an “added emphasis” on online experiences, resulted in fans instantly bidding adieu to a developer that they recognized for single-player games. While the update didn’t come as too much of a surprise, it did seem to disappoint many, prompting a response from studio head, David Anfossi.

News of the developer adding multiplayer support to its Dawn engine initially surfaced back in July. While Anfossi doesn’t say that future Eidos Montreal games will be entirely offline and/or they won’t have any online elements, he did say that the developer isn’t giving up on single-player, narrative-focused games.

“Nobody said we give up the narrative single-player games; this is what we like to do,” he tweeted. When a fan said that the concerns stem from developers increasingly shifting focus towards online games, Anfossi said that he understands where they’re coming from. “As creatives we have to try new things to stimulate us; but we can’t deny what we’ve done to build Eidos Montreal,” he continued.

Anfossi also asked fans to “stay tuned” if they’re looking forward to “strong action-adventure games” that will be “respectful of the essence and the quality of games created by Eidos Montreal.”
