Square-Enix Rep Thinks Kingdom Hearts III Could Be a Good Starting Point

The gap between Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts III is about fourteen years long—it spans an entire console generation! We’ve seen some spin-off titles here and there, but this is the first numbered Kingdom Hearts game on a console in over ten years! Naturally, that means some players trying out Kingdom Hearts III might have never played a Kingdom Hearts game before. A rep from Square-Enix, however, believes those newcomers will be fine.

When asked by IGN of newcomers will have any trouble jumping into the game, community manager Sunil Godhania said, “Absolutely not.” The way he sees it, players new to the franchise shouldn’t be wary of the series’ many entries and spin-offs. He said, “Please, just play the game, get into it, and I’ll think you’ll find a lot that you love about it.”

Somewhat surprisingly, Godhania claimed there are many fans of the series who hadn’t necessarily started out with the first game. He noted, “Actually, we’ve found that any Kingdom Hearts game can be a jumping-in point for anyone,” he said. If what he is saying is accurate, that might mean there are people who have played games like Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days and Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance and were perhaps able to understand what’s happening.

On the bright side, Kingdom Hearts III will almost exclusively feature new worlds, including the series’ first Pixar worlds. Maybe that will make the game a little more accessible? But until Kingdom Hearts III is (finally) out, we’re just left to wonder.

In case you aren’t convinced, you can play every Kingdom Hearts game right now on the PlayStation 4! You just need to buy the Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 + 2.5 Remix and Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 Final Chapter Prologue collections.

Kingdom Hearts III will release worldwide on January 29, 2019 for the PS4 and Xbox One.
