Sony Announces PlayStation Classic, a Mini PS1 Loaded With 20 Games, Coming in December

It seemed inevitable following Nintendo’s success with their classic plug-and-play consoles loaded up with the games of yesteryear. Sony has finally announced their own version, PlayStation Classic, which will release on December 3, 2018 pre-loaded with 20 fan-favorite PS1 titles. Less than half the size of the original PlayStation, the miniature console recreates the look of that console, as well as the feel with PS1-style controllers. The packaging is also made to induce nostalgia by being as close to the original as possible.

So far, Sony has only revealed five of the 20 games on the PlayStation Classic. Final Fantasy VII, Jumping Flash, Ridge Racer Type 4, Tekken 3, and Wild Arms will all come loaded right on the console. The remaining 15 games will be announced later this year, and Sony promises that there are “more fan favorites.” All PlayStation Classic games will be playable in their original format, which we assume means no alterations or updates to fix or modify anything within them.

The box comes with the console, an HDMI cable, a USB cable (for power, power adapter not included), and two replica PS1 controllers for any games that support local multiplayer. The PlayStation Classic is available now to preorder from select retailers for $99.99 USD (MSRP) / $129.99 CAN (MSRP). While the front of the console may feature a space for memory card slots, they are simply to recreate the classic look. The machine will have a virtual memory card that will allow you to save your game data directly to the console.

December 3rd, 2018 is a significant day in PlayStation history. It will mark exactly 24 years since the original PlayStation console launched. The PlayStation Classic can currently be preordered from GameStop and Best Buy, though more retailers may follow in the future.

What other titles do you think should fill out the rest of the PlayStation Classic games? Which of your favorites do you hope makes the cut? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
