PlayStation 5 Sales Japan

PlayStation 5 Sales Reach 1 Million Units in Japan, Faster Than PS4

As of September 5, 2021, PlayStation 5 sales in Japan have reportedly reached over 1 million units, just 43 weeks after the console’s release on November 12, 2021. By comparison, the PlayStation 4—which was released in February 2014 in Japan—took around 11 months to hit the same number; about one month longer than the current generation of consoles.

The sales approximations come from Famitsu, which reports that the console has sold a total of 1,012,656 units in Japan. Among those numbers, 847,421 units were the standard PS5 model, while 165,235 units were the digital edition. Furthermore, packaged PlayStation titles such as Resident Evil Village continue to stay at the top of the console’s software sales, currently sitting at around 67,000 units sold. In the same report, Famitsu notes that the recently announced Final Fantasy XVI will continue to push console sales upwards.

Globally, the number is even higher. Back in August, Sony reported that it acquired enough chipsets to reach its target of 14.8 million sales by the end of the fiscal year. Even back then, global sales were sitting at around 10.1 million units. In the UK, the PS5’s launch broke sales records to become the biggest console launch ever. Unfortunately, coupled with the fact that semiconductor chip shortages are looking to continue into 2023, prospective customers will find it difficult to purchase the PS5 for the foreseeable future.

If you’re looking to cop yourself the new model of PS5s, Digital Foundry found via testing last week that there were no significant differences in performance, despite some reports saying that the console performed “worse” due to its smaller heatsink. And if you already own a PS5 and are looking to expand the console’s paltry storage space, you can also check out our write-up on how the PS5’s recently unlocked SSD expansion slot performs.
