Platinum Games President: “You’ll see us on the PS4 Eventually,” “Bayonetta Didn’t Sell What we Wanted it to Sell”

Even after releasing Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance back in February, Platinum Games hasn’t had any time to rest, as they are currently working on two different Wii U titles right now – The Wonderful 101 and Bayonetta 2.

When it comes to non-Wii U projects, Platinum Games doesn’t have anything announced at the moment, but their name did appear in the big list of developers supporting the PlayStation 4 back at the system’s unveiling. Speaking to Polygon, Tatsuya Minami, President of Platinum Games, revealed that it wasn’t necessarily about a game in development, just that their presence was more about “our stance towards the platform.”

Interestingly, Minami did say that “right now, we’re working with both third-party publishers and first-party publishers” and that “we’re on Sony’s list because if we’re going to work with third-party publishers, we’re obviously going to be making multiplatform games and that means that we will be making PS4 games.” He then finished up this thought by adding that “we’re always talking about multiplatform development with [third party publishers]. So you’ll see us on the PS4 eventually.”

In that same interview, Minami also discussed Platinum Games’ history, giving the developers at the studio an A grade, but when it comes to the actual business of the studio, he said, “Whether we’ve sold as well as we would have liked, or whether the company has the amount of money that everybody would love to have in the company, I think I’d probably rate it as a C or even a D.”

Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is definitely going to help improve the outlook for Platinum Games, with Minami noting that “we’re expecting Metal Gear Rising to sell better than Bayonetta,” with the latter just happening to be the company’s #1 selling title. Sitting at just over a million copies sold, he added that “Bayonetta didn’t sell what we wanted it to sell. We were hoping it was going to do a little bit better than that, though you can’t put it all on the game itself. I think there were a lot of issues with when it came out, the kind of marketing behind it.”

With Revengeance carrying the Metal Gear name and fast-paced gameplay, don’t be surprised if it overtakes Bayonetta as the #1 selling Platinum Games title sooner rather than later.
